We need to ensure our permitting process is clear and affordable, and we consider the landscape of businesses in our region (to reduce concerns about active competition between business neighbours).

I would like to see a variety of business types and we should ensure we encourage the kinds of businesses we want to see flourish by simplifying the process for them to get started and promoting how simple it is!

We've lost industrial taxes over the years - and those are hard to get back. I will ensure we are thoughtfully considering any potential loss of light industrial or commercial properties and work to ensure we retain and grow this as a proportion of our city's tax base. We cannot simply tax businesses higher to fill the gap - they cannot sustain ever increasing taxes any more than our residents can. We must work to encourage more commercial growth through the building of walkable commercial districts (foot traffic is essential for small businesses), through ensuring we have small commercial parcels that are affordable for local business owners, and doing what we can with zoning to encourage more experimentation through our residential neighbourhoods. Can this neighbourhood financially sustain a corner store?

My career began in tourism - working at a kayak shop! This is an essential part of our financial success and therefore we must encourage it while ensuring it doesn't come at the cost of a delightful resident experience.

I promise to work towards a Port Moody where all residents can access a local park for a walk after dinner. Green spaces are used and appreciated when they are easy to access! They are a critical part of our ability to feel connected as a community and contribute to our social and physical well-being.

Urban centres can become incredibly hot if we are not thoughtful about the design of the buildings and greenspaces within our urban core. I will advocate for designs that reduce the intense heat for residents in these areas.

Traffic is a big problem in Port Moody - and although mode shift (switching to walking, rolling, biking, or using transit) will never solve the entire problem, it's one of the most cost effective ways to start to address things.

We need to be able to walk/bike/roll to access what we need - I support more micro commercial activity (think of a corner store at the end of the block) and generally more commercial space throughout the city.

It needs to feel safe and easy to walk/bike/roll around our community - this requires safe crossings, sidewalks, and bike lanes that connect all the way through.

Allowing residents to start micro-commercial businesses in more areas will support our economy and our desire to have walkable neighbourhoods. I want to see a small corner store at the end of the block, perhaps a cafe you can walk to in a residential area.

I believe it is appropriate to consider the maintenance costs to our community of having an indoor pool - and consider at what population level we can afford to absorb those costs into our property taxes without it feeling too significant on each home. Once we are able to determine when we can support this essential infrastructure, we can start to plan ahead!

We have areas of our city without sidewalks - this is an accessibility and safety issue.

We also have areas where the sidewalks are not usable for those with mobility aids, and we must ensure everyone has access.

We should introduce wayfinding supports for those with reduced or no vision through our city.

I am also open to recommendations from our committees who work hard to prioritize needs for accessibility!

To me - we need to ensure we do not sell city assets, we diversify our tax base, and we ensure our spending is focused and thoughtful for the cities long term success (including thoughtful debt management).

One of the most important elements of representing the public on council is ensuring your decisions are grounded in an understanding of what is needed and important within the community. I can only successfully ensure I have done this if I expose transparently my decision making process and what I have used to help me determine the right path for our community. This allows the community to provide me feedback.

After talking with hundreds of neighbours during this campaign, I feel so inspired by how engaged Port Moody is in their local politics. I promise to continue to engage both in listening, and in promoting clear information for community learning.

For example - if we can address speeding through good community design rather than ticketing - that would be ideal (and right now, we need to address speeding on residential roads in both ways).

We are less than two thirds the size of our neighbour Port Coquitlam, but our police budget is nearly 80% of what they spend on policing. We need to ensure we are being thoughtful about our police budget and how it impacts our overall city budget.
