Shirley Wilson

Independent for Abbotsford Council

Local Government, Planning, & Democracy

Budgeting

Transparent and accountable fiscal responsibility.
It is always important to keep the public apprised of what taxpayer dollars have been, or will, spent on. Where tax dollars come from means we'll be able to speak confidently about the dollars.
As stewards, demanding the accountability of the staff to ensure money is spent as promised is key to successful fiscal responsibility.

Mental Health, Drugs, & Addiction

Mental Health Crisis Response

I have prioritized this response in my platform, especially as it relates to street disorder and housing. I know this situation well though family, and the end results are tragic if not handled well.
I intend to continue to work locally, regionally, and provincially as I have for the past five years to ensure services are equalized, levelled up, and accessible.

Overdoses & the Contaminated Drug Supply

Both policing and health care are imperative to saving lives. They go hand in hand, along with policy and legislation. I intend to champion life saving actions for each person in our community.

Public Spaces & Services

Fitness & Sports Facilities

Review and suggest adapted timelines for construction to the near - not far - future, including reviewing the budgets for this infrastructure.

As time moves on, costs move up. I believe that while some reserves are set aside for immediate improvements such as new roads, we can do more for the recreational needs of our constituents.

Biography

With 20+ years as an elected school trustee, I am ready to bring these skills to broader community. Experience, trusted leadership, accountability.

I am a current Trustee and Board of Education Vice-Chair, and I am standing for Council, standing for Abbotsford, standing for you.

After six elected terms, I want to share my professional and elected experience, competencies, and skills across the broader municipality. Serving Abbotsford as a Trustee has been a humbling gift from the voters. I am prepared to serve at the city level, demonstrating the same trust, competence, and dedication that I have brought to our community for over two decades at the board table.

I have been reflecting on my deep commitment to the community and believe my experience will help manage Abbotsford’s current growth, future planning, and local opportunities. My track record of fiscal responsibility with taxpayer dollars is solid.

Over the past four-year term, the Board of Education has stewarded more than $1.2 billion of taxpayer dollars, demonstrating a deep understanding of the conservative use of public funds.

Looking forward, I aim to build upon the strong connections Council holds with stakeholders, local community, and both provincial and federal allies. My key platform priorities include:

• Responsible Fiscal Accountability

• Safe Streets and Crime Reduction

o Community Unity and Support

• Sustainable Infrastructure and Development

o This includes expanded Recreational and Sporting Sites

I bring a solid track record in local governance. I have led with integrity, always focused on the impacts to all students, families, staff, and the community. That focus transfers seamlessly to City Council.

I fully support the ongoing advocacy efforts for flood mitigation and trade infrastructure. The political and financial support required is long overdue and I am looking forward to ensuring resilience. The devastating floods had a negative economic impact not only locally, but across the province and country.

Strengthening our city’s infrastructure is necessary so that our constituents feel supported by the very services, buildings, trails, roads, and fields they rely on every day.

I remain fully committed to the ongoing work of the School Board and look forward to her transition to Council.
