I am a proud husband, father and grandfather, a runner, beer-league goalie, and modern music lover. I serve on the Vancouver Opera board and was chair of KidSafe Project Society before its program moved last year to Boys and Girls Club. I serve (and am recused) on the West Vancouver Foundation governance committee.

I have been Vancouver Sun managing editor, publisher and editor of BIV and editorial leader of its parent firm, for whom I wrote columns that appeared in North Shore News. I have led CTV News, Southam News and Hamilton Spectator. I helped start National Post, was a CBC Newsworld host and later CBC's ombudsman, and Ottawa bureau chief of The Canadian Press.

I have taught since 2004 in ethics and leadership, research methods and media law at UBC's graduate journalism school. I host the SMB podcast on politics and business and am BC correspondent for The Hub.
