Susan Kim (김수잔) is a trilingual Korean-Canadian settler with a decade of experience working on the front-lines of community-led, social-justice oriented organizations across Canada.

She is the current Director of Operations for the Fernwood Neighborhood Resource Group and volunteers with local environmental and cultural groups such as the Sierra Club of BC and the Victoria Korean Women’s Association. Susan is a renter in historic Chinatown, and has been a resident of the city for almost a decade.

An avid musician, triathlete, kickboxer and sci-fi reader, Susan enjoys sharing food with good people, cycling the city and walking her friends’ dogs.

Susan is running for city council because she believes in an affordable, sustainable, liveable Victoria – and she’ll do the work necessary to achieve that dream.

Reason for running

submitted by the candidate or their team
Susan is running to make Victoria affordable, sustainable and livable–to solve the housing crisis and address the climate crisis. Raised by a single mom, Susan benefited from public services and amenities. She wants the next generation to have access to the same opportunities.

Soaring housing costs, health clinic closures, family doctor shortages, environmental disasters and the pandemic continue to threaten the health and well-being of all Victoria residents.

  • New families, recent arrivals, marginalized/racialized communities and low-income residents are disproportionately impacted.
  • The rising cost of living is pushing out youths, young families, skilled labourers and workers, and small businesses.
  • Worker and voter dissatisfaction is at an all-time high.
  • The ‘missing middle’ reveals underlying, city-wide social inequities that are only getting worse.

We need to work together to keep Victoria...

Affordable

  • Susan will push to approve more below-market and affordable housing and will fight to protect renters from renoviction.

Sustainable

  • Susan will work to build a transit system that makes sense for our city and develop evidence-based policies for combatting the climate crisis.

Liveable

  • Susan will fight for more and better health care in Victoria and ensure the city is liveable for all residents, including Indigenous peoples, people of colour, those experiencing homelessness and members of marginalized communities.
