Biography

from their website

“I know a better future is possible if we put people before politics and build communities where everyone can live authentically and with dignity.”

Charlene “Char” Smylie is a former mayor, municipal councillor, small-business owner and community advocate with experience in governance, economic development, the trades and community transition.

Charlene began her working life with an interest in the trades, including experience in commercial electrical work, and later co-founded Redstone Electrical Services, where she has helped oversee operations including finance, communications, branding, licensing and permits. She has also worked as a consultant supporting organizations with governance, volunteer coordination, fundraising and community initiatives.

Her public-service experience includes two terms on municipal council in Wabamun, Alberta, first as a councillor and later as mayor. During her time as mayor, Charlene helped guide the community through the transition away from a coal-based economy, advocating for support for affected workers and families while advancing economic development initiatives, regional partnerships, public-space redevelopment and long-term financial planning.

Charlene has also served in senior municipal governance roles, including on the Alberta Municipalities Board and the Alberta Safety Codes Council. Her work has included governance, emergency management, economic resilience, regional collaboration and mentorship. In 2023, she received a life member award recognizing her advocacy for community, mentorship and good governance.

A lifelong environmentalist, Charlene is passionate about protecting watersheds, supporting a just transition and ensuring that development and infrastructure are safe, sustainable and planned for the long term. She has spoken internationally about just transition and change management for communities navigating major economic shifts.

Now living on Vancouver Island, Charlene continues to build community through small business, consulting and volunteer work. She believes good government should put people before politics, make decisions based on evidence and plan for a future where communities, workers and the environment can thrive together.

Charlene is running in Ladysmith-Oceanside to bring her experience in local government, community transition, business and environmental advocacy into provincial public service.
