Biography
Dr. Richard Smith is research scientist and project manager. His field of expertise is in Immunology/Microbiology. He received his PhD from the University of British Columbia and was awarded a Post-doctoral fellowship from the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda MD) for further studies at the Scripps Medical Research Laboratories (La Jolla CA). From there he worked for a biotechnology company developing patented, ground-breaking technology for in vitro diagnostic tests detecting human pathogens.
This early work led to the publication of over 20 peer reviewed scientific articles and a family of more than 21 international patents.
More recently Dr. Smith managed large multi-national life science projects for Defence R&D Canada and the Canadian Forces Health Services Group. These projects led to the development of vaccines and broad spectrum anti-viral drugs. During his tenure with the DRDC, he led a NATO study group examining new technologies for use in medical countermeasures. In preparation for the 2010 Olympic Games, Richard led a risk assessment team examining possible bio-chem threats and their mitigation.
Dr. Smith was recently part of a nation-wide group developing a framework for reducing the price of biologic drugs. Working with the BC Ministry of Health and representatives from all provinces and territories, a new strategy was developed to reduce the cost of biologics by 80%. He also served as a contract tracer and case manager with Island Health during the COVID epidemic.
As a volunteer Richard has been the president of the Royal Canadian SAR (Sidney) and oversaw the acquisition of new equipment and training space. He has led groups of young adults to Baja CA to build houses and schools. As an Operating Room Tech, he joined volunteer surgeons treating patients in Baja and was part of an international response to the massive earthquake in Haiti in 2010.
Richard is married and has 5 beautiful daughters. He enjoys sailing, gardening, cycling and spending time with four grandchildren.
Richard chose to be a candidate with Centre BC because he agrees with their pragmatic and accountable philosophy of governing. He hopes that his scientific training will bring logic and rigour to the development and implementation of policies that are positive and provide opportunities for every British Colombian.
