By building the right mix of homes and businesses, my plan is to get more people living and working close to transit hubs. Not only will the increase in supply help to ease the cost burden of rentals and home ownership, but will it also cut down travel time and costs for everyday living.
Furthermore, by building close to mass transit, our city can then work to get people out of their cars and into more active transportation options. Less cars means less parking, which cuts down the construction cost of new homes; less need for gas (or EV charging); and in the long-run gets people healthier by walking and cycling more to potentially reduce health care needs.
Building close to mass transit also allows for more affordable seniors, student and accessible home options. It also allows for more opportunities to get non-market and below-market homes for our most vulnerable populations.
In regard to the environment, we need to build on our Environmental Sustainability Plan to ensure we implement the right strategies. We need to collaborate with Indigenous Peoples. We need to plant more trees. We need to continually invest in our parks, recreation, arts and culture. We need to protect our watershed. We need more green tech entrepreneurs working in our city. We need to educate all residents and businesses, both current and future, how best to keep our city green.
We also live in a very diverse and multi-cultural city. I aim to build on our cultural hubs (ie. French, Korean, Chinese, Iranian) strategy to get more festivals, small businesses and community groups all working together to make Coquitlam a destination of fun for local residents and visitors.
Biography
I gratefully acknowledge that we live and work on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem First Nation) and Coast Salish Peoples. We thank kʷikʷəƛ̓əm who continue to live on these lands and care for them, along with the waters and all that is above, and below.
My name is Steve Kim and I am a first term Coquitlam City Councillor seeking re-election.
I was born in Vancouver to South Korean immigrants, and raised in Coquitlam since the age of eight, graduating from Centennial Senior Secondary, Dr. Charles Best Junior, and Meadowbrook Elementary.
Being a 2nd generation Korean-Canadian, I understand what it's like being caught between two cultures--navigating the opportunities and challenges in living, studying and working in the Lower Mainland. Which is why I've focused my life to building bridges and creating mutually understanding between communities. I know first-hand that diversity makes us stronger and bring this to the Council table.
I have also dedicated my life to serving in the community. For instance, over the past two and a half years, I’ve been a regular volunteer driver for the City’s Meaningful Meals Program (formerly the Seniors’ Meal Program). To date, I've delivered 1000s of meals to local seniors and those in self isolation.
I am also an entrepreneur and small business owner with over 20 years of experience in the technology, digital media, entertainment and non-profit sectors. I hold a Bachelor of Arts from Western University, and a Master of Arts from Korea University, where I specialized in the study of venture-backed technology, business and economics.
Currently, I live in the Maillardville, with three generations of my family living, working and studying across the Tri-Cities.
Reason for running
Our City is growing and has so much going for it. But, rising tides must lift all boats. During this time of recovery, we still have heavy lifting to do.
I will continue to tackle our affordability challenges; diversify our economy by focusing on cultural hubs, small business and entrepreneurship. I support innovative green strategies and active transportation networks to make our city more livable.
Building on my first-term, I now have experience and understanding of city processes required to get things done. My balanced approach, collaborative style and holistic view bring a strong representative voice for the next four years.
So I’m asking for your support again. Please vote for Steve Kim.
Thank you.
