Bruce Levy is a son of Toronto St Paul’s, growing up on Rathnelly Ave, in the heart of one of Toronto’s iconic neighbourhoods. As a child, Bruce proudly served in the Republic of Rathnelly’s Irregulars, fighting for the preservation of grass over concrete. He alternated morning and afternoon paper routes and spent weekend hours playing ball hockey in the parking lot beside the CPR tracks. On occasion, he may have even accepted a buddy’s dare to grab onto a slow freight car to ride a block or two. For Bruce, it was a childhood full of vivid memories, not the least of which was a spring night in 1967 when he stayed up late on a school night to watch the Maple Leafs win their fourth Stanley Cup in six years!

Bruce’s adult years have been dominated by a three-decade career serving Canadians abroad. Bruce and his wife, Ingrid (another Toronto St Paul’s product) have had the extraordinary opportunity of living for prolonged periods in the US, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka (after which he retired following a three-year term as High Commissioner). They were fascinating places but observing them up close only served as a reminder for Bruce of how special his home country is.

The ongoing and ever-changing experiment in modern nationhood that Canada represents still has, more than any country Bruce knows, the potential to provide security and economic opportunity to millions. That is why it pains him to see Canada losing ground.

The simple fact is that for far too many Canadians, be they first generation or fifth, lives have become a daily struggle to balance scarce and overpriced housing with shocking food prices and unacceptable obstacles in health care. The federal government must never lose sight of the urgency of these crucial issues and others.

That’s why Bruce is running to be your NDP MP for Toronto St Paul’s: he believes in a Canada where hard work pays off and everyone can thrive. Bruce is eager to bring a valuable blend of political and government experience to the fight.
