Biography
Mitchell now has 33 years of experience building single- and multi-family projects, as well as some commercial and small infrastructure work. He also spent seven years working in the film industry. Throughout his career, Mitchell has dealt extensively with government bureaucracy and politics across various jurisdictions, employing hundreds of people and supporting the Red Seal training program.
Mitchell grew up in a politically active environment. His mother, Marilyn Baker, became an Alderman in North Vancouver when he was seven and later served as Mayor for nine years. During this time, Mitchell developed a keen interest in politics, often discussing government, social issues, and the economy with his mother. Marilyn was a respected politician known for making tough but fair decisions, with the courage to stand by her convictions after weighing all the facts and viewpoints—values that deeply influenced Mitchell and shaped his future. It is what drives his view that as a society we need to do our best to help each other.
He has lived this through volunteer work with numerous non-profit organizations by donating time and resources and currently serves on the District of North Vancouver Heritage Committee.
Traveling extensively with his family while growing up, Mitchell’s experiences were educational, as he learned about the culture, religion, customs and of course the history and politics of the places they visited. These experiences gave him a global perspective on public life, and further fueled his desire to make a difference. Mitchell has been exposed to the good, bad and sometimes ugly side of public life and feels that our government can do better.
But enough about him, let’s talk about you (or at least what he can do for you). I think you are worth it!
Creating Government that works
I believe a block of independent MLA’s in the legislature will create the most effective government. In a polarized political landscape dominated by two diametrically opposed parties, I see the need for a middle ground. By being independent of party ideologies, I can prioritize self-education, research of both facts and opinions, critical thinking, and genuine understanding of issues—free from the constraints of a party line. If a legislator is bound by the overarching party ideology the impetus to learn as much as possible is curtailed, and I believe we all lose. I believe that good ideas should be supported regardless of where they come from and that a solid group of independent MLAs could bring much-needed balance to government.
Fiscally and socially responsible, I believe in creating opportunities for everyone to contribute positively to society while ensuring that those who are struggling are not abandoned. At the same time, I oppose penalizing those who succeed. I am committed to bridging the widening gap between the left and right, fostering a society where success isn’t villainized, and misfortune isn’t stigmatized.
I am ready to step back from my business and into public service and will work relentlessly to achieve this long overdue mending of the ever-widening rift between the left and the right and ensure that my focus is on you, the constituents. I think you are worth it.
